Distortion: What Happens When Jesus is Redefined?

John 14:8-11 NLT - 8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." 9 Jesus replied, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don't know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.

1.    Redefined

  • Redefined - to give a new or different meaning to something, or to reexamine a concept with the possibility of changing it.

Galatians 3:11-14 NLT - 11 So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." 12 This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, "It is through obeying the law that a person has life." 13 But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 14 Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.

  • Distortion - the act of twisting or altering something out of its true, natural, or original state.

Hebrews 10:26-29 NLT - 26 Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins. 27 There is only the terrible expectation of God's judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies. 28 For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God's mercy to us.

  • Willfully/Deliberately - hekousiōs - to sin willfully as opposed to sins committed inconsiderately, and from ignorance or from weakness

2.    When Jesus is redefined, the Cross loses its meaning

Galatians 6:14-15 NLT - 14 As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world's interest in me has also died. 15 It doesn't matter whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation.

1Corinthians 15:3-4 ESV - 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

3.    Replaced with Preference

Luke 9:23 ESV - 23 And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

“Belief without surrender is demonic faith.  Even the demons believe in Jesus.” - J.D. Greear

James 2:19 NLT - 19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.

  • The real Jesus doesn’t conform to us; we are conformed to Him.

2Corinthians 3:16-18 NLT - 16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord--who is the Spirit--makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

  • Veil - kalymma - a covering that prevents a thing from being understood.
