Matthew 28:18-20 NLT - 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
GO, Baptize, Teach, Obey
1. Conversion is the beginning, not the finish line.
Luke 9:23 NLT - 23 Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
John 8:31-32 NLT - 31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, "You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
A Convert has believed; A Disciple follows and continues.
2. Entertainment produces spectators; Discipleship produces soldiers.
1Corinthians 13:11 NLT - 11 When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.
We should always be growing/maturing in the things of God.
3. Immature believers are easily deceived.
A church can be numerically large and spiritually immature.
Hebrews 6:1-3 NLT - 1 So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely, we don't need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. 2 You don't need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.
Romans 5:17 NLT - 17 For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.
4. Every Disciple is called to make Disciples.
2Timothy 2:1-2 NLT - 1 Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. 2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.
“The church doesn’t lose generations because the gospel loses power. The Church loses generations when discipleship is replaced with disciples consuming religious experiences.” - Jeff Walling, Director of YLI at Pepperdine University.
