Letters from Paul Pt. 12: God’s Supremacy

Pastor Nate Brosher

Dec 5, 2024

Colossians 1:15-23 NLT - 15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,

1. Visible Image of an Invisible God

  • The Deity of Jesus

John 1:1-5 ESV - 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Colossians 1:16-19 NLT – 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see--such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So, he is first in everything.

2. Head of the Church

Kephalē – Corner Stone, Chief, Supreme over everything.

Ephesians 1:19-23 ESV - 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

  • The fullness of God is the totality of God's nature, everything he is, including his attributes, character, power, love, and perfection.

Hebrews 2:5-10 NLT - 5 it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about. 6 For in one place the Scriptures say, "What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him? 7 Yet you made them only a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 8 You gave them authority over all things. “Now when it says, "all things," it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority. 9 What we do see is Jesus, who was given a position "a little lower than the angels"; and because he suffered death for us, he is now "crowned with glory and honor." Yes, by God's grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone. 10 God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation.

  • He is the perfect leader.

Colossians 1:19 NLT – 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross. 21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. 23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don't drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God's servant to proclaim it.

3. Don’t Drift Away!

Colossians 1:23 NLT – But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don't drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.

  • In Christianity, "blessed assurance" refers to the eternal benefits of Christ's work for believers. It can also mean the confidence that comes from the Bible's assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
