Matthew 7:7-11 ESV - "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it
will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and
to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for
bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you
then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your
Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"
1. Persistence vs Posture
Luke 11:9 NLT - "And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for.
Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you."
God answers according to relationships, not transaction.
James 4:2-3 NLT - 2 You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are
jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away
from them. Yet you don't have what you want because you don't ask God for it. 3 And even
when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong--you want only what will
give you pleasure.
Persistence doesn’t override posture.
Psalm 66:18 NLT - 18 If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have
listened.
Posture is our approach, while addressing the misalignment.
Psalm 66:19-20 NLT - 19 But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer. 20 Praise God,
who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me.
2. God as Father, Not Distributor.
Matthew 7:9-11 ESV - 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a
stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know
how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven
give good things to those who ask him!
A Father gives what is good, not just what is requested.
Matthew 7:12-14 NLT - "Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is
the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. You can enter God's
Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide
for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is
difficult, and only a few ever find it."
3. The Golden Rule
Can we be stuck in the asking stage?
Ask = Surrender, Not Control.
Matthew 6:10 ESV - 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
