1Corinthians 15:1-2 NLT - 1 Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it. 2 It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you--unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.
1. The Gospel is Something We Must Receive
1Corinthians 15:3 NLT - 3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
The Gospel is not peripheral; It is foundational!
Colossians 1:6 NLT - 6 This same Good News (Gospel) that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God's wonderful grace.
Ephesians 2:20 NLT - 20 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself (The Gospel).
2. The Gospel Has a Center
1Corinthians 15:3-4 NLT - 3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
The gospel isn’t primarily about what we can do for God; it’s the announcement of what God has done for us through Christ.
Augustine: “If you believe what you like in the gospel, and reject what you don’t like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself.”
3. The Gospel is Grounded in a Risen Christ
1Corinthians 15:5-8 NLT - 5 He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. 6 After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7 Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.
Christianity isn’t built upon a philosophy; it is built upon an event.
2Corinthians 5:21 ESV - 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Charles Spurgeon: “The Heart of the gospel is redemption, and the essence of redemption is the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ.”
4. The Gospel Changes Who We Are
1Corinthians 15:9-10 NLT - 9 For I am the least of all the apostles. In fact, I'm not even worthy to be called an apostle after the way I persecuted God's church. 10 But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me--and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace.
Gospel grace doesn’t excuse our past; it transforms our future.
We don’t work FOR salvation; we work FROM salvation.
5. The Gospel Is What We Preach
1Corinthians 15:11 NLT - 11 So it makes no difference whether I preach or they preach, for we all preach the same message you have already believed.
Romans 8:38-39 NLT - 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow--not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below--indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
