What Is Shaping You?

Nathan Brosher

Sep 6, 2026

Colossians 2:6-10 NLT - 6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. 8 Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

  • Exposure - The condition of being subject to some effect or influence.

1.    What is discipling us?

Romans 12:2 NLT - 2 Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

  • Have we allowed our culture, social media, entertainment to disciple us?

Psalm 1:1-3 NLT - 1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

Francis Chan; "It’s impossible to be a disciple or a follower of someone and not end up like that person."

Luke 6:40 NLT - 40 Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.

2.    What are we reflecting?

Philippians 4:8-9 NLT - 8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me--everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

  • Exposure creates familiarity, familiarity creates influence, and influence eventually produces behavior.

2Corinthians 10:3-6 ESV - 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

“Exposure isn’t dangerous. Unexamined exposure is.”
