It is easy to stay with people who are on the mountain top. Ministry happens in the valley! Mark 9:2-7 ESV 2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is my beloved Son; listen to him." He revealed his glory so you would take it to the broken places. 2. Are we adding fuel or pouring water on the fire? God never intended transformation to happen alone. proskarteréō means "to continue to do something with intense effort Ephesians 4:16 NLT 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. < Back Change is Coming Nathan Brosher Jul 26, 2026 1Kings 18:41-46 NKJV - 41 Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain." 42 So Ahab went up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; then he bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees, 43 and said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." So, he went up and looked, and said, "There is nothing." And seven times he said, "Go again." 44 Then it came to pass the seventh time, that he said, "There is a cloud, as small as a man's hand, rising out of the sea!" So he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot, and go down before the rain stops you.' " 45 Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel. 46 Then the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. 1. The Season Before the Change The physical drought reflected the spiritual condition. Amos 8:11 NLT - 11 "The time is surely coming," says the Sovereign LORD, "when I will send a famine on the land--not a famine of bread or water but of hearing the words of the LORD. 2. He Changed the Altar 1Kings 18:30 NLT - 30 Then Elijah called to the people, "Come over here!" They all crowded around him as he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down. God had to restore worship before He restored blessing! Galatians 5:24 NLT - 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 3. Change Begins with a Decision 1Kings 18:21 NKJV - 21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." But the people answered him not a word. God demanded a choice to Israel, and he demands a choice to us. Act 3:19-20 NLT - 19 Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. 20 Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah. 4. The Rain Started Small James 5:16-18 ESV - 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the LORD's favor has come, and with it, the day of God's anger against their enemies. 1. The Origin of the Anointing Anointed - māšaḥ - Hebrew - to smear, spread as liquid which always refers to the literal act of applying oil to someone or something that God has chosen. 2. The Anointing has changed under the New Covenant John 14:17 NLT - 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you . Luke 4:16-21 NLT - 16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: 18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the LORD's favor has come." 20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. Anointed - chriō - Greek - enduing Christians with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Act 10:38 NLT - 38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 1Corinthians 12:7 ESV - 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Ephesians 4:11-13 NLT - 11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. The healthiest churches in the world are those where the whole body ministers. 3. The Greek word for manifestation is “phanerosis” - To make visible or to reveal. Spiritual gifts are visible demonstrations of the invisible Holy Spirit. 1. Revelation Gifts Word of Wisdom Word of Knowledge John 1:45-49 NLT - 45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, "We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth." 46 "Nazareth!" exclaimed Nathanael. "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." GO, Baptize, Teach, Obey 1. Conversion is the beginning, not the finish line. Luke 9:23 NLT - 23 Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me . John 8:31-32 NLT - 31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, "You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. " A Convert has believed; A Disciple follows and continues. 2. Entertainment produces spectators; Discipleship produces soldiers. 1Corinthians 13:11 NLT - 11 When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. We should always be growing/maturing in the things of God. 3. Immature believers are easily deceived. A church can be numerically large and spiritually immature. Hebrews 6:1-3 NLT - 1 So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely, we don't need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. 2 You don't need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. 4. Every Disciple is called to make Disciples. 2Timothy 2:1-2 NLT - 1 Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. 2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Behavioral Contradictions Divided Loyalties Mark 12:32-34 NLT - 32 The teacher of religious law replied, "Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one God and no other. 33 And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law." 34 Realizing how much the man understood, Jesus said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." So it is with the body of Christ. 13 Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 14 Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. 15 If the foot says, "I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand," that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, "I am not part of the body because I am not an eye," would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. ... 25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. 26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 27 All of you together are Christ's body, and each of you is a part of it. 1. Every Believer has a Function 1Corinthians 12:29-30 NLT - 29 Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? 30 Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not! 1Corinthians 12:31, 13:1-3 NLT - 31 So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all. 1 If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn't love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn't love others, I would have gained nothing. The church grows when every part supplies something. Sam Storms, theologian/author - “ If love for other Christians does not control and shape how you employ your spiritual gift, your gift is worse than worthless, it is dangerous. Spiritual gifts are a wonderful blessing from God, but compared to the transcendent value of love they are but a temporary and incomplete dimension of Christian life.” Mark 12:28-31 NLT - 28 One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" 29 Jesus replied, "The most important commandment is this: 'Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. 30 And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' 31 The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these." Neighbor - plēsion - any other man irrespective of nation or religion with whom we live or whom we chance to meet. Luke 9:24-25 ESV - 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? Worldly Leadership craves recognition while Biblical Leadership desires faithfulness. 2. Operating Without Division Ephesians 4:2-6 NLT - 2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. 3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. 4 For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. 5 There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all. About 3 o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” He said. “Take courage. I am here.” Then Peter called to Him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over to the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” I.) The Miracle Matthew 14:18-20 NLT “Bring them here,” he said. Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.” When you give Jesus your everything, He won’t just bless it. He’ll bless you too. When we’re trusted with abundance, our response should be generous stewardship. 2Corinthians 9:8 NLT “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need, and plenty left over to share with others.” Proverbs 11:25- “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” II.) The Test Enantíos – against, opposite, hostile, resisting The presence of the storm does not mean the absence of Jesus. Mark 6:48 NLT – “He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves.” Sometimes Jesus isn’t telling your storm to be silent. ' Worldly Leadership demands respect while Biblical Leadership earns respect. 1Timothy 4:12 ESV - 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Worldly Leadership uses power while Biblical Leadership uses influence. You can force compliance, but you cannot force transformation. Worldly Leadership protects self while Biblical Leadership sacrifices self. Luke 9:24-25 ESV - 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? Worldly Leadership craves recognition while Biblical Leadership desires faithfulness. 1Thessalonians 5:23-24 NLT - 23 Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. 24 God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful. 1Peter 5:2-4 NLT - 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you.
