< Back Journey Through James Pt. 4: Mountains Chase Radford Mar 20, 2024 Full message notes here: https://estd.craft.me/Lp4roa44RVHj5Q James 1:2–4 (ESV): Testing of Your Faith 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness (endurance; perseverance). 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. “…when life goes into meltdown, when our feet are swept out from under us with the perplexing surprises of life, we do not throw in the towel. We return afresh to God. That moment of life implosion, taken to Christ, is where we will finally get traction and power in our Christian lives. Our agony is where God himself lives.” - Dane Ortlund James 5:10-11 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. "If we endure all things patiently and with gladness, thinking on the sufferings of our Blessed Lord, and bearing all for the love of Him: herein is perfect joy." - Francis of Assisi “Ability, strength, and success feel safe. But they are deadly dangerous, creating conceit. Inability, weakness, and failure feel dangerous. But they are safe ground, creating humility. Beyond this, our lowly weakness physically, psychologically, intellectually, educationally, and even spiritually is precisely the catalyst for divine power. Power for what? For calm, for growth, for joy, for communion with God, for evangelistic unction, for our preaching to sing. In short, for fruitfulness in the Christian life. Jesus himself taught, ‘Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit’ (John 12:24).” - Dane Ortlund Romans 8:37–39 (ESV) 37 ...in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. < Back Preparation: There’s Nothing! Pastor Nate Brosher Mar 31, 2024 John 19:1-6, 15-20, 28-30, 32-34, 36-37 NLT 1 Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip. 2 The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him. 3 "Hail! King of the Jews!" they mocked, as they slapped him across the face. 4 Pilate went outside again and said to the people, "I am going to bring him out to you now but understand clearly that I find him not guilty." 5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, "Look, here is the man!" 6 When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," Pilate said. "I find him not guilty." ... 15 "Away with him," they yelled. "Away with him! Crucify him!" "What? Crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the leading priests shouted back. 16 Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So, they took Jesus away. 17 Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, [Golgotha]). 18 There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them. 19 And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." 20 The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it. ... 28 Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty."29 A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. 30 When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit. ... 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. 33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs. 34 One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out. ... 36 These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, "Not one of his bones will be broken," 37 and "They will look on the one they pierced." 1. The Journey Flogging/Scourging was used as a Roman art of punishment. Flagellum - consisted of three separate thongs, each ending in a set of two lead balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals. The Crown – Believed to have come from the jujube tree. Thorns would have been 2-3”. The Cross – was estimated to be 2 meters wide and 3 meters long at the weight of 165lbs. The Walk – 2/5 of a mile over 600 yards (6 football fields). The Nails – 6 to 8” long into the wrist and foot. Crucifixion – difficulty breathing, constrained blood circulation, organ failure and asphyxiation. 2. The Finale: “It is FINISHED!” Matthew 27:51 NLT At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, Jesus came to fulfil the law. What was finished? There’s NOTHING that can prevent us from receiving eternal life. Previous Next

  • Life Groups

Life Groups God designed us to do life together. There is an all-too-real epidemic of loneliness, lack of sense of belonging, and poor discipleship within many of today’s church communities. How Life Groups Work Life groups are groups of 2-4 people (all men or all women) who read the Bible and follow Christ together. They meet for one hour each week to reflect on the Scripture they read, discuss life — how they were obedient to God's word or how they struggled to live it — and then encourage and pray for one another. 01 Reflection Reflect on the Scripture you read or that week’s sermon. Discuss its application to your life. 20 Minutes 02 Obedience + Accountability Share your successes and failures in obeying God’s word. Think about what kind of questions you can ask of yourself and others when admitting to struggles and areas of unbelief (sin). 03 Believe + Pray Commit yourself to actively believing God's word and pray about how you can respond to and demonstrate the realities of God’s Kingdom in your life. 20 Minutes 20 Minutes Why Life Groups Work Life groups work when we love God, love one another, and are obedient to God's word (Matt. 22:34-40; John 14:21). While the life groups format is important to follow and based on biblical principles, without love they are merely rules which, in and of themselves, have no transformative power to renew our minds. Scripture exhorts us to submit ourselves to the ways of the Lord (James 4:7; Jer. 17:10; Rom. 8:7; Eph. 5:21). In following the example and life of Christ, we are to CARE for one another. Companionship Accountability Repentance Encouragement Companionship In the opening chapters of Genesis God said, "It is not good for man to be alone." While solitude and silence are essential parts of life, when God welcomes us and adopts us into His family we are joining exactly that — a family. A family that God desires to do life together, sharing and enjoying the blessings and gifts He has given each one of us. Advancing God's eternal Kingdom of love together. Sharpening and loving one another in all things as we await the Day of the Lord. See: 1 Thess. 5:11; Col. 3:13; 1 Cor. 15:33; Eccl. 4:9-10; et al. Home Groups Members 5-20 Duration + Frequency 1-2 Hours, Bi-weekly Sign Up Home groups are a unique setting which provide space for deep community to form and for exploration of teaching in a way that is not possible in a Sunday or midweek service. A home group a group of people choosing to push into this idea, intentionally pushing deep into community and teaching together. Practically, this means church members are meeting regularly to share life and grow in faith together. There are a number of activities that are commonplace in home groups: Praying together Studying the Bible Exploring an aspect of the Christian faith Catching up on one another’s news Worship Studying a book about the Bible or Christian faith together Sharing a meal What truly matters is that the group’s activities center around Christ and the discipleship of the group’s members. The key is to grow in our love for God and for one another. Home groups are led by individuals who have a teaching and/or pastoral gifting. All leaders are vetted and equipped by elders of the church as they must be of godly character (Titus 2:7-8) and able to rightfully divide the word of God (2 Tim. 2:15). While there is no set structure groups must follow, one can typically expect: Greetings and chit chat, perhaps with snacks or a meal Prayer Worship Sharing of prophetic words with the group (always to be tested; see 1 Cor. 14:29) Lesson and discussion on Bible passages and themes Ready to sign up? Our Pastor Pastor Nate & Jessica Brosher We have a passion for the community of Delaware County. We've served here with Destiny Christian Center for 13 years under Dr. Keith O’Neal as his Assistant Pastor before Destiny launched Bridgeway on the west side of Muncie in October of 2023. Our Vision + Values Our lead Pastor has a desire to see those who have been hurt and broken to find a bridge back to their destiny and purpose. “Building Bridges to Your Breakthrough” isn’t just a saying, it’s a passion that we will make known on a weekly basis. Building others that they may change their trajectory so that they can change the world through Jesus Christ. 01 Jesus is the Centerpiece The purpose of Bridgeway is to bring people closer to Jesus Christ. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. His message will never change. “I am the way, the truth and the life.” - John 14:6 Our Core Beliefs We nurture a rich and diverse theological ecosystem without compromising on the essentials of the faith. While we enjoy exploring the depths of God’s word and engaging various Biblical concepts and perspectives, we focus on the essentials that unify the Body of Christ. Christianity is a historic faith with a long lineage of saints led by God who gave their lives to advance and defend it. There are certain truths (non-negotiable doctrines) one must hold in order to be a Christian according to Scripture. 01 One God There is one triune God — the Creator of all things — existing eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spir it.
